What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM card, is a chip that is soldered into your device. This means that you don't need to use external physical SIM cards to activate data plans. Instead, you can download data packages directly to your phone from the Airalo app/website.

The key advantages of an eSIM are:

  • It is completely digital, so there is no need for insertion or physical cards.
  • It offers flexible and affordable data plans.
  • It is environmentally friendly, as it eliminates the need for plastic SIM cards.

How to Use an eSIM

  • Installing your eSIM: To install your eSIM, first make sure your device is eSIM compatible by consulting our list of eligible phones. Once you have verified your device, you can download and install your eSIM from the Airalo app/website.

  • Enabling data roaming on your eSIM line: Once you have installed your eSIM, make sure to enable data roaming on your eSIM line to access telco networks in the corresponding region. Unlike roaming with your mainline, you will not be charged extra on your eSIM line.

  • Matching APN settings: After installing your eSIM, make sure the APN settings in your installation instructions match the APN settings on your eSIM line.

  • Connecting to the network: It may take a few minutes for your eSIM to connect to the network after installation.

  • Turning off and deleting your eSIM: You can turn off your eSIM line as needed, but keep in mind that deleting your eSIM is permanent and cannot be retrieved. We recommend only deleting your eSIM if it cannot be topped up or if you have no intention of using it again.

  • Benefits of eSIM: Using an eSIM offers a range of benefits, including the ability to switch data plans without leaving your home, no need to keep track of physical SIM cards, and access to affordable and flexible data plans.

  • Disadvantages of eSIM: The only disadvantage of using an eSIM is that it is only available on newer devices that support the technology. However, as eSIM technology becomes more mainstream, this disadvantage will become less prominent.
